On January 14, the Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) urged people to elect its leader and jailed Member of Parliament (MP) Amritpal Singh as Punjab’s Chief Minister in the upcoming Assembly elections during a conference in Sri Muktsar Sahib district. Held on the occasion of Maghi Mela, the conference saw several Panthic leaders attack the current government and raise long-standing religious and social grievances.

On January 13, Punjab Police, on day 318 of its “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, registered 50 first information reports (FIRs), arrested 68 drug smugglers and seized 2.7 kg of heroin, 977 intoxicant tablets/capsules and INR 32,650 drug money from the possession of arrested persons, across the state.

The Supreme Court (SC) on January 13 deferred by two weeks the hearing on a plea filed by Jagtar Singh Hawara, a convict in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Beant Singh, seeking his transfer from Tihar Jail, New Delhi, to a prison in Punjab. Hawara, a Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terrorist, is serving a life sentence in the case.

Police on January 12 arrested two men, who were allegedly recruited by foreign-based gangsters through social media for an extortion and murder attempt, identified as Davinder Singh and Anuj Kumar and seized two pistols—a .30 bore and a .32 bore— from them, following an encounter in Patiala district. The duo is alleged to have opened fire at the residence of Darshan Singh in Gaddo-Majra, Rajpura, on December 13, 2025 on the instructions of gangster Goldy Dhillon, during which an elderly person sustained a bullet injury.

Ludhiana Police on January 12 arrested three members of the Rohit Godara gang, identified as Sumit Kumar, Sanju, and Sumit alias Altron alias Tunda, and seized two .32-bore pistols with magazines and four live cartridges, following an encounter in the Haibowal area of Ludhiana district. During the exchange of fire, multiple rounds were fired from both sides, and two of the accused sustained injuries.

The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) on January 12 arrested two shooters and an accomplice involved in the murder of kabaddi promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh alias Rana Balachauria, identified as Karan Pathak alias Karan Defaulter, Tarandeep Singh, and Akashdeep, in Howrah, West Bengal. The accused were arrested following an intelligence-led operation spanning Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Sikkim. As of now, five accused have been arrested in connection with the case.

A wanted member of the Rohit Godara–Goldy Brar gang, identified as Vikas alias Vicky and carrying a reward of INR 1 lakh for his alleged involvement in multiple criminal cases, was arrested from Loni in Uttar Pradesh (UP). A resident of Mahendergarh district in Haryana, he was wanted in an Arms Act case registered at Delhi’s Chanakyapuri police station. Police on January 12 stated that he was an active member of the Rohit Godara–Goldy Brar gang and played a key logistical role for the syndicate. Vikas had been declared a proclaimed offender and is allegedly involved in at least 18 criminal cases across four states—Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) on January 12 took cognisance of a plea raising concerns over the security of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who is lodged in Nabha Jail, observing that the matter was “serious” and warranted urgent attention. The court’s observation followed submissions by petitioner’s counsel, D.S. Sobti, who stated that the undertrial’s life was under threat from the banned terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), based on inputs received from the Additional Director General of Police (Internal Intelligence).

Police on January 11 arrested two shooters in connection with the January 4 murder of sarpanch Jarmal Singh in Tarn Taran district from Chhattisgarh. The arrests were made with the assistance of Raipur Police, as the accused had fled Punjab after the crime and gone into hiding. Although police officials remained tight-lipped, it was learnt that the accused were being brought to Punjab on transit remand.

Four key operatives of the Rohit Godara–Goldy Brar gang, identified as Raman, Lokesh, Balraj alias Balram, and Ravinder Singh alias Ravi were arrested in two separate incidents, along with two .30 Beretta pistols, one Zigana pistol, one 9mm pistol, and eight live cartridges, in Kaithal, Haryana. According to the Haryana STF, Raman and Lokesh were arrested on January 10 in Karnal while travelling in a bulletproof vehicle, while Balraj and Ravinder were arrested on January 14 from Pundri in Kaithal. Police said the arrests are linked to twin shootings in the United States (US), stemming from a deepening rift between the Lawrence Bishnoi and Brar–Godara factions. The accused allegedly orchestrated the killing of Sunil Yadav alias Goliya in Stockton, California, on December 23, 2024, and were also involved in an attack at a truck repair facility in Fresno on October 18, 2025, targeting gangster and Bishnoi associate Harry Boxer. The second incident is believed to be part of an escalating internal gang split, after Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar broke away from the Lawrence gang in 2025.

Two masked assailants on a motorcycle, in an extortion attempt, opened fire at a luxury car rental showroom, Royal Limo, near Mullanpur in Ludhiana district on January 10. The gunmen fired at high-end vehicles and left behind “calling cards” linked to notorious international gangsters. Police later confirmed that the business owners received a high-value extortion demand shortly after the attack.

Khanna police on January 10 busted a major drug-smuggling racket and arrested five of its members, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, Angrej Singh, Harshdeep Singh, Prabhjot Singh alias Prabh, and Gurtej Singh and seized 4.20 kg of heroin from the possession of two of the accused, in Ludhiana district.
