Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana Member of Parliament (MP) Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, speaking in the Lok Sabha on December 11, said that an atmosphere of fear was prevailing in Punjab and that no one felt safe as gangsters were ruling the roost. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Warring stated that people were receiving threat calls from jails as well as from abroad. “The state government has failed to provide safety to the people. Gangsters have entrenched themselves deep into the political system. The Shiromani Akali Dal fielded a candidate closely related to a gangster in the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election,” alleged Warring.

Chabal Police, on the intervening night of December 10–11, busted a three-member heroin smuggling gang by arresting a woman, identified as Sharanjit Kaur alias Shanno, and seizing 701 grams of heroin in Chabal, Tarn Taran district. However, her husband, Happy Singh alias Happy, and their associate Harinder Singh of Chabal managed to flee the spot.

On December 10, Punjab Police, on day 284 of its “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, registered 70 first information reports (FIRs), arrested 84 drug smugglers and seized 4 kg ICE, 1.7 kg of heroin, 50 grams of opium, 33 kg of poppy husk, 965 intoxicant pills and INR 2,910 drug money from the possession of arrested persons, across the state.

Police on December 10 arrested a drug smuggler, identified as Navtej Singh and seized 2.006 kg of ICE drug from him, in Amritsar district. The probe revealed that he had been in contact with a handler in Doha, Qatar, during his stay abroad, and after returning to India he continued working as a ground courier, collecting narcotics from designated locations on instructions sent via WhatsApp.

Three schools in the national capital received bomb threats via email on December 10, containing references to the Khalistan movement, in New Delhi. The message read: “Aaj 12:05 PM Bo.mb Blast Hove Ga? Jhoothe Police Muqabale Khalistan Referendum Walian De In Punjab; Khalistan De Movement nu Delhi 2UN Tak Laye.” Authorities are treating the threat seriously and have advised the schools to ensure the safety of students and staff.

A Punjab-based businessman, identified as Abhishek Kumar, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) under the anti-money laundering law in a drugs trafficking case. He was taken into custody on December 9 and remanded to six days by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Mohali. The ED case stems from a Punjab Police FIR alleging large-scale inter-state trafficking of psychotropic tablets and capsules, particularly Tramadol and Alprazolam, by a network of medicine retailers and wholesalers.

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Mohali, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district, has rejected the bail plea of Akashdeep Singh, an accused in the August 14, 2020 hoisting of a Khalistan flag at the Moga deputy commissioner’s office. The court said the seriousness of the allegations, the evidence gathered so far, and the stage of the trial did not warrant bail. The prosecution opposed the plea, stating that Akashdeep had links with the banned Khalistani group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) and that the incident was part of a broader conspiracy to promote a secessionist agenda, attracting serious charges including sedition.

Amritsar Police on December 8 arrested six alleged operatives of a Pakistan-backed cross-border arms-smuggling module, identified as Gurbir Singh alias Sonu, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopa, Gorka Singh alias Gora, Rajwinder Singh alias Raju, Jaspal Singh alias Jass, and a 16-year-old boy and seized six pistols, including five .30-bore pistols and one 9mm PX5 pistol, in Amritsar district. The preliminary probe found that the accused were in direct contact with a Pakistan-based handler through social media, receiving coordinates to retrieve and move weapon consignments. The gang was supplying these weapons to criminals in the Majha and Doaba regions in Punjab for nefarious activities.

The Border Security Force (BSF) on December 8 recovered two large packets of heroin weighing 6.641 kg near Daoke village in Amritsar district. The consignment, wrapped in yellow adhesive tape with illuminating sticks and metal loops attached, contained 12 smaller poly packets filled with heroin.
