According to media reports, the Sikh community in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) of Pakistan is facing troubles as the members of the community are once again receiving calls from extortionists. A local Sikh trader who has a cosmetics shop in the Karkhano Market recently received a call from Afghan numbers asking him to pay ‘charity money’ to the militants. The businessman has received two calls for extortion in a short span of two days and is being threatened with dire consequences if he failed to pay up. The Hayatabad police have opened an inquiry into the case.

Sikh pilgrims celebrated the 322nd Baisakhi Mela at Gurudwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur. Around 818 Sikhs from India came to border town Kartarpur through the corridor in a procession. Other than India, pilgrims from Pakistan, Dubai, the US and Canada were also participated in the Baisakhi festival.

The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested a drug peddler, identified as Mandeep Singh, near Attari along the International Border (IB) with Pakistan in Amritsar District. During search across the barbed fencing, the personnel recovered 10 packets containing 10.7 kilograms of heroin. When challenged, the BSF men heard sounds cocking of weapons and opened fire in self-defence. Mandeep was injured while his accomplice fled from the spot. During search, the BSF found heroin in a bag.

The Border Security Force (BSF) recovered 12 kilograms of heroin, worth INR 600 million in the international market, near India-Pakistan International Border (IB) in Amritsar district. “We seized 12 packets of the contraband near the border fence. The area is manned by 88 Bn, BSF, Amritsar sector. A 13-foot-long PVC pipe was also found there. It was probably used to push packets across the border. No arrest has been made so far,” a BSF official said.

Some Sikh religious and political leaders in Pakistan came out in the open to exhort the community to ‘help’ militant movements in Kashmir. Messages were delivered to the Pakistani Sikh community on August 5, which is being observed as Youm-i-Istehsal (the day of exploitation) in Pakistan. The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSPGC) president Satwant Singh in his video message said that supporting Kashmiris in their “cause” is their duty, which they would continue to perform. He claimed that Kashmiris are being subjected to atrocities and denied their rights. “Sikhs have been helping the oppressed and it is time for the Sikhs to help Kashmiris,” he said.

They demanded restoration of special status of Jammu and Kashmir and release of all Kashmiri political detainees.

According to reports, after the refusal by Canadian government to recognize Sikhs For Justice (SFJ)’s Referendum 2020 campaign, there is likelihood that Pakistan government could also rebuff SFJ to continue with its anti-India agenda from its soil. Pakistan has earlier declined SFJ’s request to hold registration for Referendum 2020 among Indian Sikhs who had gone there with Sikh jatha to celebrate Baisakhi last year (2019). The President of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) Satwant Singh disassociated himself with SFJ, its Referendum 2020 campaign and its legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and said that PSGPC had not received any request to hold any function with regards to Referendum 2020 in any of the gurdwaras. “Let the request come then we will discuss in the meeting and take appropriate decisions”, he said. Another senior Sikh leader from Lahore who didn’t wish to give his name said that “We will not allow SFJ to hold any function or the voters registration for Sikhs of Pakistan, we (Pakistani Sikhs) will not be the part of his personal agenda, even our local Pakistani friends have started asking us whether we will betray with Pakistan for Khalistan”.

Sikhs in Pakistan want the Imran Khan government to deal with those staking claim over the historical Gurdwara Shaheedi Asthan in Lahore at its own level and restore confidence among minorities. Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) president Satwant Singh said, that “Sikhs across the world are sad to hear the news about Gurdwara Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh. The vision of the Pakistan government, especially Prime Minister Imran Khan, is to promote peace and brotherhood. The incident that happened at Shaheedi Asthan is the act of an individual. There is a plot behind the gurdwara, which is a property of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETBP). They plan to grab that plot. This is wrong and can’t be tolerated.” Meanwhile, the ETPB, a Pakistan government body under which the PSGPC works, has lodged a complaint against Suhail Butt Attari, who is seen intimidating the Sikh community in Pakistan.

An activist of Dawat-e-Islami (Beraillwi), who is also a caretaker of Mazar of Muslim prophet Hazrat Shah Kaku Chesti in Lahore has threatened the minority Sikh community saying that Pakistan is an Islamic nation that belongs to Muslims. In a video, Sohail Butt, who also runs a shop in Landa Bazar, along with some local activists have occupied the land of Gurudwara Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh and has threatened Gopal Singh Chawla, the former chief of Pakistan Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (PGPC) who hoisted Shri Nishan Sahib (a Sikh symbol) at the Gurudwara last year. Sohail claims that the land on which Gurudwara Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh and its adjoining 4-5 kanals of Gurudwara land belong to Mazar of Muslim prophet Hazrat Shah Kaku Chesti and adjoining Masjid Shaheed Ganj.

The Baluchistan government handed over a 200-year-old Gurudwara to the Sikh community. The Siri Guru Singh Gurdwara located on Masjid Road in the centre of the city has been used as APWA Government High Girls School for 73 years since the creation of Pakistan in 1947.

Pakistan reopened the Kartarpur Corridor more than three months after it was temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but no Indian pilgrim visited the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib. "Pakistan today opened the Kartarpur Corridor. However, no Indian pilgrim visited it,” Evacuee Trust Property Board Deputy (ETPB) Director Imran Khan said.

Pakistan decided to reopen Kartarpur Corridor for all the Sikh pilgrims on June 29, 2020, on the occasion of the death anniversary of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, announced by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Twitter on June 27. He underscored that Pakistan is conveying to the Indian side its readiness to reopen the corridor. The corridor was temporarily closed on March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To ensure that necessary precautions are taken, Pakistan has invited India to discuss standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the reopening.

Pakistan’s former Railway Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique offended Sikh sentiments by dubbing the great Sikh emperor Maharaja Ranjit Singh as a profligate, dacoit and looter. He also leveled allegations of desecrating and looting mosques on Maharaja Ranjit Singh. “Ranjit Singh Ayash was a dacoit looter ruler who openly desecrated Muslim faith mosques and Sufi shrines, looted heavily and forcibly imposed Sikh beliefs. Established oppressive Dogra rule over Kashmir,” reads the English translation of Khawaja Saad Rafique’s tweet.

Reacting to Khawaja Saad Rafique’s derogatory statement on Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Pakistani Sikh leader Gopal Singh Chawla said that Khawaja Saad Rafique was trying to earn political mileage and hide his failures by leveling baseless allegations on the great Sikh ruler. Chawla, while recalling the tenure of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, said that no one got capital punishment during his four decades-long regime.

The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) Secretary-General, Sardar Amir Singh said that “Due to the Covid-19 virus, the Sikh community will mark the death anniversaries of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Guru Arjan Dev in the most simple manner.” According to sources, Sikh pilgrims from all over the world, including India, will not be able to take part in the religious ceremonies to mark the important events on the Nanakshahi Calendar this month.

Sikh Labour councillor Parbinder Kaur is under investigation for allegedly supporting Khalistani terrorist groups, including praising Khalistani terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and its founders involved in violent acts, in Sandwell, United Kingdom (UK). The Daily Mail reported her sharing posts on WhatsApp and Facebook glorifying militants who assassinated public figures. Sandwell council is aware of the situation but has directed inquiries to the Labour party, which, along with Kaur, has yet to respond. Rami Ranger of the British Sikh Association criticized such actions for damaging social cohesion and the interests of the wider Sikh community in the UK.

According to a media report, British Sikh lawyers have established a new court as a dispute resolution forum for the Sikh community in the United Kingdom (UK), aimed at aiding families in resolving conflicts in line with Sikh principles. The court is not a religious tribunal but comprises around 30 magistrates and 15 judges, primarily women. They offer mediation services and direct parties to courses covering various issues such as domestic violence and substance misuse. These courses are available in Punjabi and English. In case mediation fails, cases can be brought before a Sikh court judge for legally binding judgments under the Arbitration Act. Participation in the court requires consent from both parties, and there is a focus on safeguarding and cooperation with English courts.

According to sources, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has withdrawn Look Out Circulars (LOCs) for three individuals from Punjab in connection with the violence at the Indian High Commission in London. Initially, LOCs were issued against 15 suspects based on videos and photographs. However, after a thorough investigation, no evidence linking the three individuals to the incident was found, leading to the closure of their LOCs. The attack was orchestrated by Khalistani extremists, including Gurcharan Singh, Avtar Singh Khanda, and Jasvir Singh, resulting in criminal charges such as trespass, flag disrespect, and property destruction.

Sikh Federation United Kingdom (UK) leader Dabinderjit Singh recently disclosed in an interview with Akaal TV that prominent Geo/The News London reporter Murtaza Ali Shah faces death threats from the Indian state due to his coverage of Khalistan issues and Sikh activists. Singh revealed that the Metropolitan Police are aware of these threats, linking them to Shah's reporting on the Khalistan Referendum and the Khalistani outfit Sikhs For Justice (SFJ).

Five British doctors and academics specializing in blood cancer, while speaking on a BBC Sounds podcast, refuted claims that Khalistani terrorist Avtar Singh Khanda's death from acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) at 35 could have been triggered by poisoning. Charles Craddock, the academic director of the Centre for Clinical Haematology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK), along with four other doctors and academics, emphasized the aggressiveness of AML and the impossibility of inducing it through poisoning. Khanda's death certificate lists AML and pulmonary embolism as causes, while his family and friends allege he was poisoned by the Indian government, with the UK covering it up.

He states that despite advocating for campus issues in his manifesto, his stance on Khalistan led to him being targeted, impacting his campus life and highlighting the lasting impact of false propaganda surrounding Khalistan-related issues.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) Member of Parliament (MP) Raghav Chadha on March 21 met with British Sikh MP and known Khalistani sympathizer Preet Kaur Gill in London, United Kingdom (UK). Gill, a Labour MP, has a history of advocating for Khalistani groups and mobilizing support for Khalistani terrorist Jagtar Singh Johal, accused of multiple crimes, including targeted killings and funding the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF). Chadha's meeting with Gill, without political clearance from the Indian government, is viewed as concerning by intelligence sources.

A Khalistan supporter identified as Gurpreet Singh was sentenced to 28 months in jail on March 20 for stabbing two Indian-origin men and a female police officer with his kirpan during Indian Independence Day celebrations last year (2023) in Southall, United Kingdom (UK). The 26-year-old Indian citizen was ordered to forfeit all three kirpans. Judge Kwame Inyundo stated that while carrying a kirpan is lawful, using it as a weapon is not. Gurpreet, who arrived in the UK in 2020 as a student and applied for asylum in 2021, may face deportation to India after serving his sentence.

According to sources, the United Kingdom (UK) government, led by Prime Minister (PM) Rishi Sunak, has established a special task force to dismantle the funding network of Khalistan supporters. The government has frozen over 300 bank accounts and seized approximately INR 100 crore linked to these supporters. Notable seizures include INR 20 crore from the banned Khalistani terror outfit Sikhs For Justice (SFJ). The task force targeting pro-Khalistan extremism was announced in 2023, following a meeting between External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar and UK Security Minister Tom Tugendhat in New Delhi. This announcement highlights joint efforts to combat anti-India extremism. The task force, with over 5000 accounts on its watchlist, has reached out to United States (US) counterparts such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for international cooperation in cracking down on Khalistan support groups in the US.

Protesters, led by Paramjit Singh Pamma, coordinator of the Khalistani terror outfit Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) in Europe, blamed Gandhi for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and Amritsar killings. Despite Cambridge University Police preventing entry to the protestors, Gandhi required a security escort by UK Police to leave safely.

She cited concerns raised by Five Eyes nations about targeting Sikh activists. In response, Security Minister Tom Tugendhat stated that the government is continually assessing threats and using intelligence services to mitigate them. Measures are in place to tackle foreign interference.

While no concrete evidence links the list to actual assassinations, there have been deaths among those associated with the movement, such as Paramjit Singh Panjwar and Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Despite lacking definitive proof, the existence of the list exacerbates fears within the Sikh community regarding potential threats from Indian authorities. Mothada and others remain cautious, believing that the UK government is overlooking the threat from India.

According to sources, United Kingdom (UK) Foreign Secretary David Cameron has intervened in the case of Scottish Sikh Jagtar Singh Johal, who has been imprisoned in India for six years. Cameron is calling for an investigation into the claims of torture by Punjab police. However, he stopped short of demanding Johal's release, citing potential interference in the ongoing judicial process. Johal is accused of involvement in targeted killings, a charge he denies. His brother is demanding his immediate return. Jagtar Singh Johal has connections to the banned terrorist organization Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) and is currently held in Delhi’s Tihar jail on terrorism charges.
