Shootout
On November 21, 1991,
18 people at a marriage party were killed in a shootout at Basarke village in the Amritsar district of Punjab. The incident occurred during the evening when
four armed Khalistanis entered the premises by jumping over the boundary wall
and began shooting indiscriminately. The deceased included a pregnant woman and
several teenagers. The individuals responsible for the shooting were identified
as Piara Singh, a resident of Basarke Bhaini, and his three sons, Sarabjit
Singh, Satnam Singh, and Gurdev Singh. Although they were initially sentenced
to death, they were later granted clemency by the President and their sentence
was commuted to life imprisonment.
